Dana Tan was just another teenager living in Gotham. School, her friends, her boyfriend, and avoiding the Jokerz were her biggest concerns.
At least they were until her boyfriend went missing. Nobody would tell her anything, but she was sure Max knew something, so she eventually got her to tell the whole story.
Her boyfriend, Terry McGinnis, had been Batman. The day Shriek had held the city hostage and demanded Batman's life, Terry had gone to him, and been killed. Bruce Wayne and Commissioner Gordon, the former Batman and Batgirl, had decided that it was best to keep Terry's identity secret and just list him as a missing teen, to protect his family.
At first, Dana didn't know how to handle the revelations. But when Shriek continued to terrorize the city and the same people who had been telling Batman to give up his life were now blaming him for leaving, she decided. Gotham needed a protector. Terry deserved to be remembered. She would continue what he started.
Or rather, she and Max would. Like the first "Batwoman" had done, they could better protect their identities and patrol the city if they took turns wearing the mask. Max could bring her technological genius and fighting experience, and Dana... the money. She hoped. Her father disapproved of how her grades had slipped and she had no plans to go to college; she fully expected to be cut off after graduation.
Much to her surprise, not only did he not cut her off, he paid for her martial arts classes and loaned Max money to get her through college. (Dana had convinced Max to continue her education, that it would be a waste of her intelligence not to.) Wayne also gave them money, anonymously; they weren't on the best of terms, because of his role in Terry's death and covering it up.
Dana is now 21 years old; she and Max have been operating as Batwoman for three years. Max's graduation is coming up, which they're both looking forward to. She already has an internship with Wayne Enterprises which is very likely to lead into a job. Dana, meanwhile, has been training with Kairi Tanaga and works as private security during the day.
Dana still harbors a lot of resentment, towards Wayne, Gordon, but also towards the civilians who were so quick to turn on Batman. She groups people into three categories: allies, civilians, and enemies, and she considers anyone who hinders her as part of the last group. She doesn't kill or use guns, more out of respect for the Batman legacy than her own morals. The only person she trusts completely is Max.
